Formula

Gain = sell price − buy price. Equity: ≥12 months = LTCG @12.5% over ₹1.25L, else STCG @20%. Property/other: ≥24 months = LTCG @12.5%, else STCG at your slab. 4% cess applies.

Example

Buying equity at ₹5,00,000 and selling at ₹8,00,000 after 18 months gives a ₹3,00,000 LTCG; tax = 12.5% of (₹3,00,000 − ₹1,25,000) plus cess.
